We are seeking a research intern to perform experimental work within the frame of a multi-investigator project trying to develop intervention strategies for serious childhood diseases. Your main tasks will include the performance of DNA isolation and library preparation for genome sequencing from clinical samples from premature babies to determine microbiota composition.

The Mucosal Immunology group at ETH Zürich focuses on understanding the crosstalk between intestinal bacteria and the immune system. We apply this understanding to develop therapies and prophylaxis for diseases connected to the gut microbiota. Our interdisciplinary team is part of the institute for Food, Nutrition and Health, in the department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zürich and also has strong links to the Institute for Systems Biology and the Institute for Microbiology in the Department of Biology.

Job description

Your profile

You are a recent graduate in Biology, Health Sciences or a related discipline (B.Sc./M.Sc. or equivalent) with an interest in microbiome research. Fluency in spoken and written English is required, German would be a bonus. Specific duties will include:

  • Clinical samples handling and preparation for downstream analysis
  • Colony identification and isolation for mass spec identification and long-term storage
  • DNA isolation and library preparation for genome sequencing
  • ELISA
  • Analysis and interpretation of results
  • Assistance with general lab duties

Competencies:

  • First hands-on experience working in the lab
  • Experience with standard molecular techniques
  • Attention to detail and meticulous handling of samples
  • Ability to communicate in spoken and written English

Our work encompasses (anaerobic) microbiology, immunology, metabolism, microfluidics and synthetic biology approaches, giving the applicant the opportunity to learn about a wide range of scientific techniques. You will be fully integrated into our team and will participate in group meetings and social events on a voluntary basis. Gross salary will be in accordance with the regulations of the ETH Zürich. Starting date is negotiable.
